While HAAi (pronounced ‘hi’) is the Dutch word for ‘shark’, the 30-year-old Australian real name Teneil Throssell) actually got her DJ name from the title of a song by Indonesian group The Panthers. She moved to London five years ago, as the singer of psychedelic rock band Dark Bells.
After cutting her teeth playing Ridley Road Market Bar in Dalston every week, before impressing the bookers at Phonox in Brixton when she supported Jacques Greene, HAAi’s ascent as a DJ has been a whirlwind.
From pummelling techno to breaks and heady ‘90s rave, HAAi’s sets are fast and furious, weird and wonderful. In her own words, her style of DJing is chaotic: an exhilarating chaos that has earned her a following of devoted fans.
A need for experimentation, exploring new sounds and new ways of making music – the inspiration driving HAAi who continues an incredible couple of years by releasing her sophomore EP on the prestigious label Mute Records.
